From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Earlier this week, the American filmmaker Kevin Smith posted a message to social media revealing he had survived a “massive heart attack” over the weekend.
The 47-year-old — best known for helming Clerks and Chasing Amy — Tweeted a picture of himself from a hospital bed covered with tubes on Monday (26 February) morning.
Now, the director has posted another message, revealing he has returned home safely and has become a vegetarian.
“Home again, home again, jiggety-jig!” Smith wrote on Twitter. “Home is where the heart is and the heart is feeling good! It’s actually getting more blood flow and oxygen than it has in a long time.
“So I am ALERT, to say the least! Thank you for all the kind words, folks — from Vegetarian Kev, Day two!”
On Sunday (25 February), Smith was due to play two stand-up shows at the Alex Theater in Glendale, California. After the first, friends rushed the comedian to hospital, where he was treated for a blockage of the LAD artery (aka ‘the Widow-Maker’).
“If I hadn’t canceled show two to go to the hospital, I would’ve died tonight,” he said. “But for now, I’m still above ground!”
Smith later published a statement on Facebook about the incident: "This is all a part of my mythology now and I’m sure I’ll be facing some lifestyle changes (maybe it’s time to go Vegan).
“But the point of this post is to tell you that I faced my greatest fear tonight... and it wasn’t as bad as I’ve always imagined it’d be. I don’t want my life to end but if it ends, I can’t complain. It was such a gift."
