Avengers director Joss Whedon has jumped ship from Marvel to DC for a solo Batgirl adventure.

Whedon will write, direct and produce the untitled project that'll be a part of Warner Bros' DC Extended Universe alongside Wonder Woman, Aquaman and Zack Snyder's superhero mashup Justice League, Variety reports.

This will be the first time the character has been given her own film despite appearing in Batman and Robin where she was played by Alicia Silverstone.

It is believed that Whedon will write other characters from the world of Gotham into the film, including Alfred Pennyworth (Jeremy Irons) and Batman himself, Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck)

In the DC Comics, Batgirl is the daughter of Gotham City's police commissioner James Gordon, Barbara; she made her debut in 1967's The Million Dollar Debut of Batgirl.

Batgirl is one of the most popular superheroes in the world, but has never gotten her own movie. The project will also feature other characters from the world of Gotham.

Warner Bros has wasted no time in placing DC's female characters front and centre of projects with Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman set to get her own film this coming June. A Suicide Squad spinoff focused on Margot Robbie's character Harley Quinn is also in development.

It's taken Marvel almost a decade with Captain Marvel planned for 2019 with Brie Larson in the lead role.

Whedon - who directed Avengers Assemble and its sequel Age of Ultron - previously stated he'd return to Marvel if he could make a project based on Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow.

He also recently teased an upcoming project which could very well have been his Batgirl film. He described it to The Wrap as “an original screenplay that is very different from everything I’ve ever done except for that it’s exactly the same. It is a story about a girl who goes through some unbelievable sh*t, and that much is all I can say.”

The director has an extensive list of credits having created TV shows Buffy the Vampre Slayer, Angel, Firefly, Dollhouse and Marvel's Agents of SHIELD.
