We're living in a post-Mortdecai world now; where Depp's become less of an actor, and more of a rootless accent floating without drive or consequence. Here, he once more returns to the role of bumbling detective; reprising his role as legendary man-hunter Guy Lapointe featured in the first of director Kevin Smith's self-titled True North trilogy, Tusk.
Though there he battled against a murderer fixated on creating the ultimate man/walrus hybrid; here, in Smith's second True North installment, Yoga Hosers, he must battle the Bratzis - AKA one foot tall Canadian Nazi sentient-Bratwurst, played by Smith himself. This is all making perfect sense, right?
Depp is joined onscreen by his real-life daughter, Lily-Rose Depp, and Smith's own daughter, Harley Quinn Smith; playing two 15-year-old yoga enthusiasts and convenience store workers who join Lapointe in his battle.
Unfortunately, word has come out of Sundance that this movie's weird in a bad, bad way; similar to Tusk's own bemused reception back in 2014, leaving a lot of critics wondering whether perhaps the cult director of Clerks is hitting a patch of creative stagnation.
Though, the fact he willingly refers to himself as a "human hockey jersey" in the trailer suggests he may merely be beyond the point of caring what critics, or even audiences, think of his work anymore. This is Smith's time now; and, boy, is he going to enjoy it.
Austin Butler, Tyler Posey, Ralph Garman, Jennifer Schwalbach, and Vanessa Paradis also star.
You can make up your own mind when the film hits US cinemas 29 July. The UK release date is yet to be announced.
