Titled God Particle, the film has been in development by Abrams' production company Bad Robot since 2012.
Set in the near future, the story focuses on a team of astronauts who make a terrifying discovery that challenges all they know about "the fabric of reality." As is the norm with Abrams' projects, little else is known.
Nigerian-American director Julius Onah will step behind the camera while casting wise, there are currently no people attached.
Abrams has numerous producing credits coming up: as well as God Particle, he's producing HBO's Westworld, the recently confirmed sixth Mission: Impossible film and Cameron Crowe's upcoming music series Roadies.
Next up, though, is 10 Cloverfield Lane.
Announced under the working title of The Cellar, a surprise trailer dropped for the film in January which unexpectedly revealed it to be set within the same world as 2008's found footage film Cloverfield. The film, due for release 11 March, stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead and John Goodman.
Abrams will not return to the Star Wars universe despite the huge success of Episode VII - The Force Awakens; instead, Episode VIII will be directed by Rian Johnson.
Filming was announced as officially commencing on Monday (15 February) with this on-set video.
