From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Jennifer Lopez has thanked a fan who urged his fellow plane passengers to watch Hustlers in a viral video.
To celebrate Lopez’s Golden Globe nomination for the film, writer and JLo super-fan Joseph Longo tweeted at the US airline JetBlue before his flight from New York to Los Angeles.
“I WILL make sure everyone watches Hustlers on this flight,” Longo wrote, before tweeting: “Hey @JetBlue, there are definitely Oscar-voters on this NY to LA flight. Please let me make an announcement!”
Soon after, Longo uploaded a video in which the flight’s pilot is heard overhead explaining that he had received “a special request from one of our customers”.
“He’s a well-known backup dancer for Jennifer Lopez,” the pilot said, “and as of this morning, Jennifer Lopez was nominated for a Golden Globe for her work in Hustlers. Hustlers is one of our in-flight movie options.
“We’d greatly appreciate if you join us in supporting Ms Lopez and watch Hustlers on our flight today. Thanks for your support, and we hope Jennifer wins that Oscar.”
In another tweet, Longo clarified that he referred to himself in the request as “the backup JLo” and not her backup dancer.
In response, both Lopez and Hustlers director Lorene Scafaria tweeted their thanks,.
“This is amazing!!!!!!!” Lopez wrote. “You can be my backup dancer any day. THANK YOU FOR THE SUPPORT!”
Lopez received her a Golden Globe nomination for her work as a stripper-turned-robber in Hustlers, and is widely expected to earn an Oscar nomination in January.
She last received a Golden Globe nomination in 1998, for her role as the tragic pop icon Selena Quintanilla-Perez in a musical biopic.
