From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

All this obsessive speculating on who Jena Malone's character would be in Batman v Superman: is she Carrie Kelly AKA Robin? Or is she Barbara Gordon AKA Batgirl?

And for what? Entertainment Weekly now reports Jena Malone has been cut from the theatrical release of Zack Snyder's epic throwdown. She'll now be relegated as a feature of the R-rated home entertainment release called the "Ultimate Edition"; set to feature more brutal fight sequences and further contextual hints to the rest of the DC universe.

This apparently follows the publication learning of a few of the secrets held within the DC universe timeline; which now physically exists on a retractable board in Snyder's office, locked under the floorboards and away from prying eyes.

That doesn't necessarily mean Malone isn't being set up as the new Robin or Batgirl; more that her role here will probably be more about laying the groundwork for any future solo Batman films. What's particularly interesting is the remark by DC's Chief Officer, Geoff Johns, on the appearance of Robin's suit covered in Joker graffiti in the film.

"We’ll be exploring that," he said. "No one says specifically the name of which Robin that is." Could the death of Batman's old sidekick pave the way for Malone's character to take up the job? Or will Malone be playing the version of Robin that Batman seems so grieved over?

Elsewhere, EW learned Green Lantern won't be any immediate feature of the universe, which is why he hasn't been a feature of the promo art for Justice League; it's looking now unlikely we'll see any mention of the Green Lantern Corps until, at least, Justice League - Part Two.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice hits UK theatres 25 March.
