Good friends make the harshest enemies, if this new clip from X-Men: Days of Future Past is anything to go by.

A short video from the forthcoming X-Men film has been uploaded to YouTube, giving a fans a taster of what they can expect.

In the minute-long footage, a young Charles Xavier, played by James McAvoy, squares off with Michael Fassbender’s Magneto while midway through a flight.

The scene starts off with Xavier telling Magneto how he sacrificed his powers, so that he could walk again.

The tense conversation between the pair heats up and nearly comes to blows as they open old wounds.

Xavier yells: “You abandoned me!”

In response, Magneto says: “Angel, Azazel, Emma, Banshee – we were supposed to protect them! Where were you, Charles? You abandoned us all!”

Wolverine, played by Hugh Jackman tries to tell the two of them to settle down but is ignored.

Meanwhile, Nicholas Hoult’s Cyclops tries to pilot the plane as it experiences mutant-related turbulence.

The scene relates to the events at the end of the last film X-Men: First Class, where Magneto left a paralysed Xavier and fled with other mutants in the midst of the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis.

X-Men: Days of Future Past is the seventh film in the superhero franchise and will see the cast of the original X-Men films and the prequel team up to save the future of mutants and mankind.

Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage will play Bolivar Trask, the villain of the film, who sees mutants as a threat to the human race.

Another clip was released earlier this week, with Dinklage battling against Jennifer Lawrence’s shape-shifting mutant Mystique.

The film has been directed by Bryan Singer and features an all-star cast, including veteran X-Men cast members Patrick Stewart, Sir Ian McKellan and Hugh Jackman, who will be reprising their roles in the new instalment.

‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ will be released in cinemas on 22 May
