As the release date for the 25th James Bond film slowly approaches - November 2019 - many have wondered who will take over directing duties from Sam Mendes.

One name tossed around included Christopher Nolan, who has since “categorically” denied helming the next Daniel Craig-starring blockbuster.

Variety now reports a surprise frontrunner for the next spy thriller: Trainspotting and Slumdog Millionaire director Danny Boyle.

The publication claims the studios MGM and Eon are keen for Boyle to board Bond. They note how the director only has one other film in development with no cast attached; chances are, should Boyle - a Bond fan - take the job, that project will be delayed.

White Boy Rick and ’71 filmmaker Yann Demange was apparently the previous first choice, but there’s been a push for another well known name.

Boyle recently directed the TV series Trust, centring on the abduction of John Paul Getty III, the same story Ridley Scott’s movie All the Money in the World focusses on.

The next Bond movie, starring Craig, is scheduled to reach cinemas November 2019.
