From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. Natalie Portman may want to start making some room on the mantlepiece next to her 2011 Academy Award for Black Swan, it might just soon have a roommate.

Pablo Larrain's Jackie, which details First Lady Jaqueline Onassis' final days in the White House following the assassination of her husband John F. Kennedy on 22 November, 1963, is already getting rave reviews and some serious Oscar buzz; partially thanks to Portman's own ability to capture the struggle to maintain grace in the face of such overwhelming grief.

Following a bold first trailer, the new version takes a greater look at the upcoming film; intermixing its poetic, sombre cinematography with Jackie's sorrows - of navigating her own personal turmoils and the duties of preserving and shaping her husband's legacy. "I've grown accustomed to a great divide between what people believe and what I know to be real," she utters.

Her memories seem to haunt her: intercutting between her joy - dancing with her husband at a gala - and her grief, with glimpses of the first moments after JFK's assassination, his last moments in Parkland Hospital, and Onassis washing his blood off in the shower.

Indeed, Larrain's film is already shaping up to be a must-see for the year, with Portman starring alongside the likes of Peter Sarsgaard, Greta Gerwig, John Hurt, and Billy Crudup.

Jackie hits UK cinemas 20 January, 2017.
