From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Over the last year, numerous blockbusters have sunk with critics, including Suicide Squad, Warcraft, and X-Men: Apocalypse.

However, those three films all made IMDb’s top films of 2016; a list compromised of the top 10 films released in the last year that proved ‘most consistently popular with IMDb users’.

The official synopses for the list reads: “These rankings are not based upon critical assessments or box-office performance, but on pageviews by our combined web and mobile audience.”

As proven by the list, page views don’t necessarily lead to a good film. At number 10, for instance, is the Margot Robbie starring Legend of Tarzan, a film that seemingly impressed neither critics or the general public, holding a 6.3 IMDb score and 44 on Metacritic.

Unsurprisingly, the newly rebooted Ghostbusters, which proved highly controversial, came in at number eight. Critics were a little more forgiving to Paul Feig’s flick, the film holding a 60 rating on Metacritic, while IMDb users voted the film down to 5.4.

The top five films were all superhero blockbusters, created by either Marvel Studios, Warner Bros., or Fox. That superhero bubble won’t be bursting anytime soon.
