Idris Elba played up the James Bond rumours by posing for a selfie with current 007 Daniel Craig, at this year's Golden Globes ceremony.

The Luther star, who has long been rumoured as one of the strongest contenders to replace Craig when he steps down from the role, clearly couldn't resist trolling fans with the photo.

The image, shared via an Insta story, shows Craig eye-balling Elba, who returns the look with some side-eye. Elba captioned the shot: "Awks... [awkward]."

Elba has previously fuelled speculation around his move from a London detective to international spy when he posted a selfie with the caption: "My name's Elba, Idris Elba" and later kicked off a DJ set in London by remixing the famous Bond theme.

However, following the set he appeared to quell rumours by explaining to fans that, while it was hard to resist making references to the rumour, he didn't want to "tease" fans.

"I'm not teasing," he told Sky News. "I'm not meant to be teasing. But you've got to laugh, it's such an incredible rumour that has got out of hand – and hey, why not?"

Just a day before, Elba's fellow actor Rami Malek had also teased fans after being linked to the role of villain in the next film.

The Bohemian Rhapsody star was reported to have been approached for the role last year. Speaking to ET, he was relatively coy when questioned about the idea of him being Craig's Bond nemesis.

"We'll have to see about that," he said. "It would be nice to play a villain, that would be another dream role for me. I've got to play so many great ones [roles] so far, so who knows. I'm keeping tight-lipped."

Elba attended the Golden Globes in LA with his fiancee Sabrina Dhowre, where they supported Elba's 16-year-old daughter Isan, who was an ambassador at this year's ceremony.

In an Instagram video he said: "The Golden Globes tonight are unbelievably special. I get to watch my daughter on that stage. I want to shout out to her mum [Elba's ex-wife Hanne Norgaard], who has done an amazing job. We're very proud to see her on the stage. Wow. What an amazing evening."
