The actor has been a very vocal critic of Boris Johnson and the Conservatives in the run-up to the recent general election, which has led to much abuse on social media.
In an attempt to stop his critics from contacting his wife, Anna Eberstein, Grant wrote on Twitter: “One more word to my trolly friends. Troll me as much as you like. Goes with the territory. But I’ve been shown some attacks on my wife.
“She’s never pushed herself forward in any way. She’s just a brilliant, funny woman who I happen to love. Leave her alone or say it to my face.”
This is not the first time in recent weeks Grant has addressed his trolls on Twitter.
Earlier this month, he shared a mug-shot of himself and the sex worker he was arrested with in the Nineties in an apparent attempt to bait his nay-sayers.
Grant is the subject of a new documentary, Hugh Grant: A Life on Screen, which will be broadcast on Monday 23 December at 9pm on BBC2.
