Gunn spoke out on social media on Tuesday, saying casting for the movie has yet to begin.
He shared a tweet linking to a report that claimed Marvel was looking for “a thirty year-old Caucasian man, who is described as both a ‘super hero type’ and a ‘Zac Efron type’” to play Adam Warlock.
“There is no casting underway for Vol 3,” Gunn tweeted next to the original report.
“And in what world would I only cast a ‘Caucasian’ if the character has gold skin? And if I wanted a Zac Efron type wouldn’t I go to Zac Efron? Where do you get this nonsense?”
Seth Rogen joked in response to Gunn’s tweet: “S*** I was gonna submit myself for the Zac Efron type.”
Gunn, in turn, replied: “Zac Efron but not TOO Zac Efron, sorry.”
The first Guardians of the Galaxy film came out in 2014. It was followed in 2017 by a sequel, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2. Gunn directed both instalments.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 is currently expected to be released in 2023.
