From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. James Gunn is likely hidden in a remote studio, Disney executives watching over his shoulders as he completes Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Luckily, the director found time to do yet another Facebook Q&A with fans, addressing many of their questions.

One talking point was the recently released Suicide Squad, which beat Guardians of the Galaxy’s record-breaking August weekend earlier this month.

Speaking about the film’s success, Gunn said: “It beat us first weekend. We almost made more money second weekend. And there is a very likely chance we’ll make more money at the end of the day (we made more domestically than Batman Superman even).

“The great thing about Guardians wasn’t that it came in and made a ton of money but that so many people went and told their friends about the movie, who went to see it, and that people kept coming back again and again.”

He went on to reveal that, at one stage, he was offered work by DC (Guardians of the Galaxy being a Marvel Studios film).

“I’ve had opportunities to make DC films,” he told fans. “But I haven’t said yes to anything, and not sure I would at this time. I’ve talked before about which projects appeal to me the most if I was into making one, and it’s always Shazam and Metal Men and Swamp Thing and [Jonah] Hex and a few other DC IPs I’ve enjoyed for a great deal of my life.”

Shazam is currently in the works with The Rock as the titular character, while Swamp Thing is expected to appear in the animated Justice League Dark. Jonah Hex, meanwhile, was recently brought to the big screen by Josh Brolin, leaving just Metal Man.

Could it happen? Possibly. But we can’t imagine Gunn changing allegiances any time soon. Meanwhile, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is rumoured to be crossing over with Thor: Ragnarok via Pom Klementieff's Mantis.
