The writer-director of Golden Globe-winning comedy-drama Lady Bird made the comments in an interview with The New York Times having incited criticism for her refusal to discuss her past collaboration with Allen - who famously faces an assault accusation - during a backstage interview; she rightfully ascertains that she wanted to ensure she said the proper thing.
Gerwig - who appeared in Allen's 2012 film To Rome With Love - stated: “If I had known then what I know now, I would not have acted in the film. I have not worked for him again, and I will not work for him again.
“Dylan Farrow’s two different pieces made me realise that I increased another woman’s pain, and I was heartbroken by that realisation."
She added: "I grew up on his movies, and they have informed me as an artist, and I cannot change that fact now, but I can make different decisions moving forward.”
Allen's daughter Farrow, who accused him of sexually molesting her when she was just 7-years-old, praised Gerwig's words, writing: “Greta, thank you for your voice. Thank you for your words. Please know they are deeply felt and appreciated.”
Last year, actor Griffin Newman expressed his own regret in working with Allen on a forthcoming untitled project, donating his salary to charity.
Farrow's brother, Ronan, was one of the notable figures who exposed the multiple allegations of harassment against film producer Harvey Weinstein.
