From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Saoirse Ronan has quietly scolded the Golden Globes for failing to nominate Little Women director Greta Gerwig.
While Ronan was nominated in the Best Actress category for her role of Jo March in the new film, Gerwig was omitted from the Best Director category.
In fact, no woman filmmaker – including Alma Ha’rel (Honey Boy) and Mati Diop (Atlantics) – were recognised for their work.
Ronan gently highlighted she thought it was ridiculous Gerwig failed to earn a nod in a statement thanking the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA).
“Getting to play Jo March, one of the most inspiring characters in literature, still today, has been an honour,” she wrote
“I am eternally grateful to Greta Gerwig for her guidance and partnership, and for her fierce perseverance that brought this incredible cast together and created an environment for us to become a real family and tell this very special story.
“My performance in this film belongs to Greta as much as it does myself and I share this recognition completely with her.”
This is the second time the Golden Globes have snubbed Gerwig after failing to nominate her for Lady Bird at this year’s ceremony.
She went on to receive an Oscar nomination a month later, so hope is still alive for Little Women‘s chances at the Academy Awards.
In 2018, Natalie Portman criticised the HFPA’s inability to nominate women filmmakers while presenting the Best Director award, by saying: “Here are the all-male nominees.”
The full list of nominations was announced on Monday (9 December) and you can see them here.
Ronan, who previously worked with Gerwig on Lady Bird, was the sole actor to receive a nomination for Little Women. The film is released in UK cinemas on 26 December.
