Borat 2 star Jeanise Jones made a surprise appearance at Sunday (28 February) night’s Golden Globes.

The grandmother of six appeared in 2020’s Borat Subsequent Moviefilm as the babysitter tasked with looking after Borat’s teenage daughter Tutar (Maria Bakalova).

At the time of filming, Jones didn’t know who Borat was and believed she was making a documentary about women’s rights, trying to convince Tutar not to get plastic surgery and preventing her from being sold into the sex trade.

Jones was widely praised for her performance in the film and appeared at the 2021 Golden Globes to introduce the movie.

“A year ago I was a grandmother here in Oklahoma, and active in my church, then a man named Borat asked me to babysit his 15-year-old daughter,” Jones said.

“I did my best to teach her that here in America, women can be anything they want to be.”

After the film was released, a GoFundMe was set up by Jones’s pastor Derrick Scobey – who originally put Jones in touch with the Borat 2 production team – to raise money for her.

In total, it raised nearly $185,000 (£132,000) for Jones and her church.

Borat Subsequent Moviefilm took home two awards at the Golden Globes, including for Best Musical or Comedy. Sacha Baron Cohen was honoured with the prize for Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy.
