From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. Christian Bale thanked Satan during his acceptance speech for best actor in a comedy or musical film at the Golden Globes.

The 44-year-old actor, who won the prestigious award for playing Dick Cheney in the biopic Vice, said: “Thank you to Satan for giving me inspiration for playing this role.”

Soon after the remark was made, The Church of Satan responded on Twitter, writing: “To us, Satan is a symbol of pride, liberty and individualism, and it serves as an external metaphorical projection of our highest personal potential. As Mr Bale’s own talent and skill won him the award, this is fitting.

“Hail Christian! Hail Satan!”

Also during the acceptance speech, the British actor thanked his wife, saying: ““She knows the dumb crap that can come out of my mouth at times. I can sink and ruin a perfectly good movie and so-so career in one speech. So thank you for that advice, my love.”

Bale also joked about director Adam McKay casting him as Cheney: “He said, ‘I have to find somebody that can be absolutely charisma-free and reviled by everybody, so we wanted Christian Bale.’”

While Vice went into the evening as the most-nominated film at the Golden Globes, the biopic failed to grab the award for best film – musical or comedy, which instead went to Green Book. The other big winner on the evening was Bohemian Rhapsody, which took best drama and best actor in a drama for Rami Malek.
