The actress, who portrays a wealthy Manhattan socialite’s demise into addiction and poverty, admitted to drinking vodka throughout the night to calm her nerves.
Accepting her award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture (drama), she said: “Thank you to my agent for plying me with vodka in the same way that Judy Garland was probably plied with barbiturates.”
The 44-year-old also praised the film’s director Woody Allen, who “writes and directs things with such alarming regularity that we almost take him for granted.”
Blanchett beat Saving Mr Bank’s actress Emma Thompson, Philomena star Dame Judi Dench, and Kate Winslet to win the award for Best Actress.
The actress has been hotly tipped for Oscar’s success, and now looks more likely than ever to be nominated in the Best Actress category when the nominations are announced later this week.
She previously won an Oscar in 2005 for her role as Best Supporting Actress in The Aviator.
Blanchett has already picked up awards for her performance in Blue Jasmine, including the Best International Lead Actress at the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) Awards on Friday.
Accepting the award at the ceremony in Australia, she joked: “I’m Australian, so I guess it was a done deal. All I had to do was show up.”
