Instead, Sony has decided to reboot the series, focussing on the fourth novel in the Millennium series, The Girl in the Spider’s Web, the first one not written by series creator Stieg Larsson.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, neither Rooney Mara - who was nominated for an Oscar for her portrayal of Lisbeth Salander in the original - nor Daniel Craig will return.
While director David Fincher will also not be back, producers Scott Rudin, Amy Pascal and Elizabeth Cantillon will be.
Steven Knight, who recently penned Burnt, is in negotiations to write the adaption of Spider’s Web.
In the report, it is noted that Sony already spent a lot of money drafting The Girl Who Played With Fire, the originally planned sequel, and so the reboot have a much smaller budget.
