From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

When it was announced Scarlett Johansson would be starring as the central protagonist in Ghost in the Shell, fans of the source material were furious, questioning why an American actor was playing a Japanese character.

Ever since, the majority of discussion about the film has centred on the ‘whiteswashing’ debate, the likes of comic author Jon Tsuei, Memoirs of a Geisha actor Kaori Momoi, and star Chin Han broadcasting their side of the story.

While the discussion continues, Paramount has slowly moved on with promoting the film, starting with the release of five new clips.

Nothing of the story is revealed, the 10-second snippets only offering a brief glimpse of the film’s art direction.

Johansson features prominently in three of the clips while the other two feature a masked woman and Takeshi Kitano’s Chief Daisuke Aramaki.

Alongside Kitano and Johanson, the film stars Pilou Asbæk, Michael Pitt, Chin Han, and Lasarus Ratuere. Ghost in the Shell hits UK cinemas 31 March 2017.
