Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2, reportedly took $168.6m (£104.5m) in North America at the weekend. The previous weekend record was set by the Batman movie The Dark Knight, which made $158m on its opening weekend in 2008.
Harry Potter takings were aided by 3-D ticket sales, which made up 43 per cent of the market share. The final film is the only Harry Potter title to be released in 3-D.
The film franchise has proved extremely lucrative for Warner Brothers studios, with profits estimated at £4bn. Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint, who have played the three child leads since the first film 10 years ago, are now international stars.
