Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

“Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in awhile, you could miss it.”

These words were spoken by Ferris Bueller in beloved 1986 comedy Ferris Bueller's Day Off - and the character had a point; this year marks 30 years since the release of John Hughes' film.

To mark the occasion, an immersive experience has been put into place which will enable participants to have a day off in the style of Matthew Broderick's mischievous truant.

Ferris Fest has been created by company Filmed Here whose owner David Blanchard said: "Ferris Bueller is timeless; it’s really about breaking free from that nine-to-five grind and really appreciating life and taking an adventure, whatever that might be.”

The New York Times reports how this particular adventure will take place in Chicago, the setting of the film which co-stars Mia Sara and Alan Ruck as Bueller's fellow truants, Sloane and Cameron.

Some of the film's cast members will attend the experience - which has been endorsed by Hughes' family - including Cindy Pickett and Lyman Ward who play Bueller's parents.

As well as screenings of the film, there will be an 80s high school-themed dance party, filming location bus tours and, most excitingly, a "Twist and Shout" parade through downtown Chicago.

The famous Ferrari Spyder - belonging to Cameron's father in the film - will also be there. Whatever you do, no accidental leaning...

Ferris Fest will take place 20-22 May across Chicago with several hotels offering special packages for the event.
