From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The first trailer for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, due to hit cinemas next summer, has been released.

Director Matt Reeves is in charge of the sequel to the Planet of the Apes 2011 reboot Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

Dawn reportedly does not pick up immediately after Rise, but follows on ten years later from story lines it set up.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes saw the end of humanity’s reign on earth after apes took over San Francisco.

Gary Oldman, Jason Clarke, Judy Greer and Keri Russell all appear in the Dawn cast, with The Hobbit actor Andy Serkis featuring heavily in his reprised role of Caesar, the first evolved ape. Rise star James Franco will not be returning.

The official synopsis reads: "A growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier.

“They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth’s dominant species."

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is due to be released in the UK on 17 July 2014.
