The filmmaker of such films as Blue Velvet, Eraserhead and Mulholland Drive, made the claim citing changes in the industry.
Speaking to The Sydney Morning Herald, he said: “Things changed a lot. So many films were not doing well at the box office even though they might have been great films and the things that were doing well at the box office weren’t the things that I would want to do.”
When pushed to say whether his most recent big-screen feature - 2006's Inland Empire - was his final film, Lynch replied simply: “Yes it is.”
Later this month, Lynch will revive Twin Peaks for a third season 26 years after the cult series drew to a close, directing all 18 episodes. The premiere will debut in the US and UK on 21 May.
The director is also the subject of a new documentary titled David Lynch: The Art Life which will be released in cinemas on 14 July.
