After months of rumours and reports, Eon Productions has confirmed Danny Boyle will direct the upcoming James Bond movie, with Daniel Craig starring.

The Oscar-winning director previously announced his involvement with the project, with work having already begun on the script with Trainspotting scribe John Hodge. Boyle previously made a short film with Craig as Bond for the 2012 London Olympics.

Eon productions heads Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli called the director “exceptionally talented” in a statement, while the head of US distributor MGM said: ”We couldn’t be more thrilled than to bring the next 007 adventure to the big screen, uniting the incomparable Daniel Craig with the extraordinary vision of Danny Boyle.”

Craig revealed he would return to the iconic role last August, having previously played Bond four times: Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace, Skyfall and Spectre.

Boyle has also previously spoken about his involvement, saying in March: “We are working on a script right now. And it all depends on that really. I am working on a Richard Curtis script at the moment. We hope to start shooting that in 6 or 7 weeks. Then Bond would be right at the end of the year. But we are working on them both right now.”

Details regarding the Richard Curtis-penned movie are thin, although the story will reportedly focus on a person who wakes up to find that The Beatles never existed yet they remember the Fab Four’s songs. Ed Sheeran has been linked to the project.

Meanwhile, Boyle’s Bond movie is scheduled to reach UK cinemas on the 25 October 2019, with Ben Whishaw having already confirmed his return to the franchise.
