Cineworld to temporarily close cinemas

Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Cinemas across the UK are closing their doors as the film industry struggles to survive the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

While theatres across the country were forced to close earlier this year when the country entered lockdown, many cinemas had re-opened over the summer when restrictions were eased.

Other than Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi blockbuster Tenet, which was released theatrically in August, many of the year’s biggest releases, such as Disney’s live-action Mulan or the forthcoming Dune, have either converted to digital releases, or postponed their release dates until next year.

On 2 October, it was announced that the James Bond film No Time to Die, originally delayed from April, would be pushed back again to 2 April 2021.

In the days that followed, several UK cinema chains announced plans to either close temporarily, or scale back operations for the foreseeable future.

While Cineworld and Picturehouse are closing completely, rival chain Odeon is only paring down opening times in some locations.

Here is a list of all the cinemas which will be closing…
