From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Whoever suggested that car manufacturer Kia's new commercial should feature a sock puppet-wearing Christopher Walken deserves a medal.

The advert - an edited version of which will be shown in one of the coveted commercial breaks during this weekend's Super Bowl - shows the actor, sock puppet on hand, comparing Kia's new Optima sedan to "the world's most exciting pair of socks."

"There are two types of people in the world: those who are content to blend in - these people walk through life like beige socks, uninspired and bored," he delivers in typical Walken fashion.

'Then there are those who expect more; they have pizzazz."

He then introduces the Kia optima, describing it as being "...like the world's most exciting pair of socks - but it's a midsize sedan."

The ad was devised by David&Goliath, whose chief creative officer Colin Jeffrey, said: "There are a few special moments in one's career - those times when you find yourself in an interesting place, making something you never thought possible, with someone you never thought you'd meet.

"Being in a closet with Christopher Walken and 600 pairs of beige slacks was definitely one of those moments."

Walken has long since established himself as an actor unafraid to have a bit of fun; he starred in a TV spot for Danish clothing brand Jack & Jones back in 2013 and memorably featured in Fatboy Slim's "Weapon of Choice" music video in 2002.

Last year, Kia enjoyed Super Bowl success with their Sorento commercial starring Pierce Brosnan.

The very fact that this new commercial takes place in a 'Walken closet' (say it out loud) sets this apart as an advert you should probably see.
