He has been tipped to step into Harrison Ford's shoes – and Chris Pratt has said he thinks playing Indiana Jones would be "awesome".

The Guardians of the Galaxy star remained tight-lipped regarding whispers about the potential casting but wasn't too shy to express his enthusiasm about possibly playing the archaeologist, according to Comicbook.com.

The 35-year-old actor said taking on the adventure role would be an "awesome opportunity" when quizzed during a press appearance about his Hasty Pudding Man of the Year award.

The award is bestowed by Hasty Pudding Theatricals at Harvard University to an individual believed to have made a "lasting and impressive contribution to the world of entertainment". Previous winners include Dustin Hoffman, Steven Spielberg, Tom Cruise and James Franco.

It was reported last month that Pratt is being courted for a reboot of the hit Indiana Jones franchise, after Disney bought the film rights from Paramount in 2013. Other big names heard on the grapevine include Bradley Cooper and Chris Hemsworth.

The original films, which kicked off with Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1981, were directed by Steven Spielberg. Star Wars creator George Lucas dreamed up the character of Indiana Jones, who is recognisable for his bullwhip, fedora and satchel.
