Chris Evans has compared Donald Trump to a “come-to-life toilet spew” after the US president repeated false claims about election fraud.

Trump addressed Americans on Thursday night (5 November) in a rambling 17-minute tirade in which he claimed, without evidence, to have been the victim of a rigged election conducted by “big media, big money and big tech”.

In response, the Captain America star urged Trump’s fellow Republicans to stand up to the president.

“Wow,” Evans tweeted. “Hey Republicans, are you listening to this come-to-life toilet spew complete lies about the integrity of our democratic process?”

Evans also retweeted Republican congressman Will Hurd, who shared his disappointment over Trump’s behaviour.

“A sitting president undermining our political process & questioning the legality of the voices of countless Americans without evidence is not only dangerous & wrong, it undermines the very foundation this nation was built upon,” Hurd tweeted. “Every American should have his or her vote counted.”

Evans has been a vocal critic of Trump throughout his presidency, and this week (2 November) called him a “meatball” for revealing he intended to fire Dr Anthony Fauci in the event of an election win.

“This actual meatball wants to fire the US’s top infectious disease expert during a pandemic,” tweeted an exasperated Evans.

While Joe Biden, as of Thursday night (5 November), continues to have a small lead over Trump in the ongoing vote counts in states including Arizona and Nevada, the incumbent president has repeatedly shared conspiracy theories and false reports.

A number of US networks, including CNN and MSNBC, cut away from his White House speech, which marked his first public appearance in more than 36 hours. He has, however, amplified a number of baseless claims of election fraud on Twitter in the days since the election.

Stephen Colbert has also hit out at Trump’s White House rant, arguing that the president is attempting to “poison American democracy”.
