Anya Taylor-Joy says that recreating Charlize Theron’s portrayal of Furiosa in the forthcoming Mad Max prequel “just can’t be done”.

Earlier this week it was announced that the Emma actor will play Furiosa in a spin-off of 2015’s Max Max: Fury Road, with the project focusing on the military figure’s origin story.

Chris Hemsworth and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will also star in the prequel.

Discussing the news for the first time, Taylor-Joy told the Happy Sad Confused podcast that she hoped to match the “level of commitment” shown by the actors who had already appeared in the franchise.

“I fell in love with Furiosa because of the way Charlize presented her,” Taylor-Joy said.

“She did such an incredible job. It was so beautiful. I can’t even think about trying to step into her shoes. It has to be something different because it just can’t be done.”

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the sequel has not yet received an official greenlight, but the newly announced casting finally puts the project on track for production.

Creator George Miller previously revealed that the screenplay for a movie about Furiosa’s backstory was written before Mad Max: Fury Road began shooting.

The script was originally written with the intention of Theron reprising the role of Furiosa with the use of “de-aging” technology, but was later recast.
