Following his death from cancer at the age of 43, a statement released via the actor’s Twitter account said he considered playing the lead role to be “the honour of his career”.
Boseman starred as King T’Challa in the film, which was released in 2018.
Upon its release, Black Panther had a cultural impact on audiences asit was the first superhero film to be predominantly led by a black cast and crew.
As the film’s lead star, Boseman never took the responsibility lightly, which can be seen in a video he filmed for The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon shortly before it was released.
The US host invited some of the film’s most passionate fans on to the show to explain exactly why the new film meant so much to them. They were told that a video of them speaking would be sent to Boseman.
What they didn’t realise, though, was that the actor was actually stood nearby behind a curtain.
As they spoke, Boseman would step out to surprise the clearly gobsmacked fans.
One man immediately threw his arms to his chest, displaying the “Wakanda Forever” salute that reverberated around the world after the film was released. “My king! My king!”, he shouted.
Others were more emotional, embracing Boseman while fighting back tears.
Boseman’s Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) co-stars are grieving his loss, with Hulk star Mark Ruffalo writing: “What a man, and what an immense talent. Brother, you were one of the all time greats and your greatness was only beginning. Lord love ya. Rest in power, King.”
