Captain Marvel‘s Rotten Tomatoes score is plummeting due to “fake” reviews posted by “sexist trolls” in opposition to comments made by Brie Larson about diversity in film criticism.

Earlier this week, it was reported that the superhero film’s user rating on the review aggregate site, which is set by audience members, had dropped from 96% to the low sixties.

Now, with just under two weeks to go until the film’s release, the film’s score sits at 54% as a result of being bombarded with these negative reviews.

Larson, who plays the title character in the new film, recently told Marie Claire about the “overwhelmingly white male” ratio of film journalist she’s spoken to at junkets over the past few years.

Her words sparked a backlash among some male film watchers, who expressed their outrage on Rotten Tomatoes.

“Brie Larson has already said this isn’t for me, I’ll spend my money elsewhere,” one user wrote, with another adding: “Search the lead actress. Doesn’t want us going as a white male. I won’t go. I hope your movie is good without me.”

Another stated that Larson “made it clear” that “men need not attend this movie”.

Meanwhile, people who have actually seen the film are praising the performances of Larson and Ben Mendelsohn in particular.
