Being a Marvel director comes with a couple of pretty cool benefits. Not only do you get to work on a film with at least a $100m budget, but you also get to see all the Marvel films before anyone else.
James Gunn, who helmed surprise success Guardians of the Galaxy, was invited to see Captain America: Civil War early, a film that will see the titular character face off against fellow superhero Iron Man.
Not only will it see the two Avengers fighting, but also the introduction of Spiderman into the Marvel Cinematic Universe - his first since leaving Sony last year.
“I saw Civil War and I think it’s incredible,” he said in a Facebook Q&A. “It’s one of the best Marvel movies ever, and I can’t believe what a wonderful job [directors Joe and Anthony Russo] did.
“And the cast. Oh my God, they’re so good. So it’s an amazing film and people are going to be really excited to see that come summertime.”
Obviously, he’s going to give the film a good review, he’s not going to slate his boss! But what is surprising is that he talked about how brilliant Tom Holland’s Spiderman is.
Why is this surprising? Because rumours have recently pointed to his character only having a small cameo in the film, while his comments imply a bigger role.
While not going into spoiler territory, Gunn said: “I’m trying to think about what is cool to say or not. But I will say this one thing. Tom Holland is…off-the-charts awesome. Off. The. Charts. Awesome. Off the charts. Truly. Hand to my heart, he’s amazing.”
Captain America: Civil War won’t be the only Marvel film to feature multiple Avengers before the release of Infinity Gauntlet.
The Hulk has been confirmed to be featuring in Thor: Ragnarok, which is beginning to sound increasingly better than the two previous Thor films.
Civil War is out 29 April 2016.
