Since signing a multi-film contract with Netflix, Adam Sandler’s output has been consistently reviewed negatively, critics hating The Ridiculous 6, The Do-Over, and Sandy Wexler.

When Cannes announced the comedian's latest film, The Meyerowitz Stories - which was acquired by Netflix in April - would be in competition, there was much bemusement.

Starring Sandler alongside Ben Stiller, Dustin Hoffman, and Emma Thompson, the film seems far away from the usual award-winners selected for screenings at the festival.

However, after screening, the reaction to Sandler has been overwhelmingly positive, many expressing surprise at the “revolutionary” role.

“Kind of love that Adam Sandler is so rarely as great as he is in The Meyerowitz Stories, because when he is it feels so revelatory,” writes The Telegraph’s critic. “Wow, Adam Sandler might actually belong in Cannes,” heralds The Wraps review.

The Meyerowitz Stories sees Stiller and Sandler play estranged family members who meet up to celebrate their father's latest artistic work. A release date has not been revealed.

Earlier in the week at Cannes, Netflix’s Okja was booed solidly after being projected in the wrong aspect ratio. After finally screening properly, the film received a four-minute standing ovation.
