The first trailer has dropped for the forthcoming reboot of Candyman.
Produced by Get Out’s Jordan Peele and directed by Nia DaCosta, the new Candyman serves as a sequel to the cult 1992 original.
Yahya Abdul-Mateen III, last seen stealing scenes in Watchmen, portrays a visual artist who is told of the legend of the Candyman – a hook-handed killer who emerges in front of those who whisper his name five times in front of a mirror.
The trailer nicely declines to elaborate further on the plot, but it appears to show Abdul-Mateen’s character slowly transforming into the Candyman himself.
Mad Men’s Teyonah Parris, British actor Nathan Stewart-Jarrett and Euphoria’s Colman Domingo also appear, along with Vanessa Williams, who portrayed a terrified young mother in the original film.
It is currently unknown whether Tony Todd, who originally portrayed the Candyman, will return for the new movie.
The original Candyman, directed by Bernard Rose, was a sleeper hit in 1992 and has developed a cult following in the decades since. It was followed up throughout the 1990s by two sequels: 1995’s Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh and 1999’s Candyman: Day of the Dead.
The Candyman reboot arrives in cinemas on 12 June.
