From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The year that Bridget Jones has her baby is finally here. Who the father is, however, remains unknown, even by Renee Zellweger herself.

The cast of Bridget Jones’s Baby are filming three different endings in a bid to avoid plot leaks and will not find out how the romcom ends until the premiere.

Zellweger will be “kept in the dark” along with Colin Firth who returns as Mark Darcy and newcomer Patrick Dempsey, who plays love rival Mark Qwant.

“It’s kind of brilliant,” she told the Sunday Express. “None of the cast knows who fathered Bridget’s baby or who she’ll choose as her beau. The plan is to keep us all in the dark, right up to the premiere.”

Unlike the previous two movies Bridget Jones’s Diary and Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, Bridget Jones’s Baby will not be based on Helen Fielding’s book, Mad About the Boy.

Eleven years have passed since we last saw Bridget set to live happily ever after with Mark in 2004. Naturally, times have changed.

“She’s a bit more mature and has moved on, as we all have,” Zellweger told Entertainment Weekly. “I like that she tells what it’s like to be a woman in these really relatable situations. It’s so right to tell a story about Bridget in this stage of her life.”

Original director Sharon Maguire is at the helm, working on a new script written by Fielding with One Day author David Nicholls.

Firth reprises his role after telling The Independent last year that he was “ready for that moment”. “It would have to have somewhere to go,” he said when pressed to get cracking on the threequel. “Back at the time I said that a third one should only happen if we were telling a story about having moved into a different generation when we were all beginning to deteriorate a little bit.”

Bridget Jones’s Baby arrives in UK cinemas on 16 September.
