Bryan Cranston looks set to follow in Benedict Cumberbatch’s footsteps and play a Star Trek villain.

The Breaking Bad star, 58, is being considered as the baddie in the upcoming third movie, due to reach cinemas in July next year in time for the TV series’ 50th anniversary.

Filmmakers are looking for a “Bryan Cranston-like” villain, according to Film Divider, which reported that “Cranston himself has had words with the studio about taking the role”.

It remains unknown whether any dotted lines have been signed on, or indeed if Cranston is keen to play the part, but clearly this character is going to be pretty damn bad-ass.

Cumberbatch rose to fame playing the menacing Khan in 2013’s Star Trek into Darkness, alongside Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana and John Cho.

Three new female characters will reportedly be introduced to Star Trek 3, but no names have been mentioned as of yet.

Justin Lin (Fast and Furious, True Detective) is on board to direct after replacing Roberto Orci, while Simon Pegg and Doug Jung are co-writing the script.
