The Marvel movie, starring Scarlett Johansson, is currently scheduled for a 6 November release in cinemas, but there has been speculation it may be further delayed or released via Disney+ instead.
Those are the claims of a fake tweet by parody account @thedisneyplus, which has gone viral claiming that the film is bypassing cinemas all together.
“Watch the final trailer for Marvel Studios’ Black Widow, streaming November 6 for $29.99 exclusively on #DisneyPlus,” the tweet reads.
The tweet’s claims were bolstered by confirmation that Disney’s live-action remake of Mulan will debut on Disney+ instead of cinemas next month.
In a surprise move, Disney announced yesterday (4 August) that the film would be released on Disney+ at a premium price of $29.99, citing the continued closure of the majority of US cinemas due to coronavirus.
The film will also be made available to Disney+ customers in Canada, New Zealand, Australia and “many Western European countries”, Disney said in a statement. It is unclear if the UK will get to experience the film on the big screen, with cinemas currently opening up nationwide.
Black Widow’s November release date has yet to be officially affected by the continued pandemic, and Disney has stayed silent on speculation that the film may debut on Disney+ instead.
However, Disney CEO Bob Chapek stressed in a call with company investors that Mulan’s on-demand release is a “one-off”, suggesting that it is unlikely Black Widow will skip cinemas, too.
Black Widow marks the first Marvel movie to be solely headlined by Johansson, and acts as the launch film for Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Florence Pugh, Rachel Weisz and David Harbour also star.
