TV ratings measurement company Nielsen has backed Netflix‘s claims that their thriller Bird Box has been a hit.

Nielsen reports that Bird Box reached an unduplicated audience of nearly 26m viewers within its first seven days of availability (21-27 December), according to Variety.

The number is only specific to the United States, while Netflix’s claim was that over more than 45m Netflix accounts worldwide viewed the film, directed by Susanne Bier and starring Sandra Bullock, making it the “best first seven days ever for a Netflix film”.

The streaming service later clarified that it only counted accounts in which at least 70 percent of Bird Box had been viewed. However, these claims cannot be independently verified.

Nielsen did state that, of all the Netflix originals analysed, Bird Box was second only to season 2 of Stranger Things in unduplicated reach.

Furthermore, Bird Box reached nearly 3.5m viewers on its premiere day.

Bird Box, which also stars Sarah Paulson and Trevante Rhodes, sees the world under attack by a mysterious force that decimate the population. The only thing known is that, if you see the entity, it becomes your worst fears and causes you to take your own life.
