Bethesda not interested in Elder Scrolls and Fallout movies because it knows they probably 'wouldn't be as good as the games'
It might be open to one director though...
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Why then, following the international box office success of the Warcraft movie, haven’t we seen big screen adaptations of game giants Elder Scrolls and Fallout?
It seems it’s because, hearteningly, developer Bethesda doesn’t want to sell the films rights to the games unless they’re done justice.
Bethesda head honcho Todd Howard revealed that discussions have been had with studios/producers, but he wasn’t convinced.
“We’ve had a couple of in-roads, particularly with Fallout, which is a bit stickier than Elder Scrolls, but everybody’s kind of asked and I’ve taken a number of meetings over the years and nothing quite clicked where I felt, ‘Oh, that would be as good as the game.’” he told WCCF Tech.
Bethesda’s VP of Public Relations and Marketing did however suggest they’d be tempted if a certain director was on board (please god don’t let this happen, The Hobbit trilogy was enough):
“I think if Peter Jackson turned up at Todd Howard’s office and said, ‘I want to do The Elder Scrolls‘, well that would be a pretty serious conversation…but I think Peter is probably pretty busy.”
Elder Scrolls would perhaps be best adapted as a parody, centring on a group of disgruntled adventurers forced into retirement after taking an arrow in the knee.
