Justin Theroux, script writer for the Zoolander films, has suggested that Ben Stiller will resume directing duties for the forthcoming sequel.

Rumours have ran rife about a Zoolander sequel since Theroux was hired to both direct and write a script for the project back in 2001.

He held a minor role in the original, which he claims was almost a complete rip off from Gary Oldman’s Drexl Spivey in Tarantino’s True Romance back in 1993.

“I don’t think I’m going to [direct] it anymore,” says Theroux. His work commitments, in particular to his US TV show The Leftovers, have prevented him from taking the sequel on as a directorial project.

“It’ll probably get handed to Ben, which would be awesome.”

The difficulty of co-ordinating schedules to organise the sequel was one of the main reasons Theroux gave for the long period of speculation.

However, he has confirmed that he is now back full-time in New York to work on it, and is due to meet with Ben Stiller next month.

Regardless of who will end up directing, Theroux has confirmed that the script for the sequel has been written, and is currently in the process of being looked over.

“We're trying to sharpen it and hone it and, actually, I don't want to jinx anything, but it looks like it actually might be starting to get up and running."
