From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Bella Thorne has been accused of “scamming” her OnlyFans subscribers after announcing she will not be publishing nude photographs on her platform.
OnlyFans allows celebrities and influencers to share exclusive images or videos with paying subscribers. Often its content is deemed too risqué for social media platforms such as Instagram and Twitter.
Since joining the subscription-only platform last week, the actor has reportedly made over $2m (£1.52m) from her page.
The 22-year-old is now being accused of lying about sharing nude content in order to gain more subscribers.
She shared news of her monetary milestone on Twitter, accompanied with a caption reading: “Also nooooo I’m not doing nudity!!!”
Thorne was quickly met with a backlash by people claiming that she previously said otherwise in order to attract more subscribers. The Assassination Nation actor charges a monthly fee of $20 (£15.20) to access her feed.
In a screenshot posted to Twitter by one subscriber, Thorne appears to have promised “no clothes naked” content if they unlock three extra images for the cost of $200 (£150).
Thorne has also been accused of exploiting a platform that was originally created for sex workers who are still stigmatised for their profession.
One Twitter user wrote, “Bella Thorne is making millions within [hours] while sex workers are dying each day due to the illegality of their profession. Change it!”
The actor revealed that she also plans to make a movie based on her experience on OnlyFans. Film-maker Sean Baker – who previously directed critically acclaimed indie films The Florida Project and Tangerine – has signed on to the project.
The Independent has contacted Thorne’s representatives for comment.
