From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Batman's rubber body suit has been named the greatest superhero outfit.

The caped crusader's black armour, with its distinctive horned helmet, triumphed in a Lovefilm poll ahead of the London premiere of latest Batman film The Dark Knight Rises.

Second place went to the gadget-packed Iron Man costume worn by Robert Downey Jr, while third was Thor - as played by Chris Hemsworth.

Christian Bale will be seen slipping into his Batman outfit for a third time when the new film hits cinemas in the UK on Friday.

The poll of 3,500 film fans by the streaming and dvd rental service found Batman's adversary The Joker was the best-dressed villain.

And the top villain accessory was judged to be the metallic arms of Doctor Octopus from Spider-Man 2.

The poll also identified the ultimate supervillain, based on the top powers, gadgets and outfits.

It found that as well as having Doctor Octopus's arms, the top baddie would have the face and costume of The Joker, cape of Doctor Doom and the leather mask worn by Hellboy's adversary Kroenen.

Lovefilm editor Helen Cowley said: "Even the 'ultimate superhero' would struggle to fend off this foe whose powers and accessories make for a very potent mix of weaponry."
