Stephen Hawking biopic The Theory of Everything has been named Outstanding British Film at the Baftas tonight.

Set in the 1960s, the film depicts a young Stephen Hawking as he struggles to come to terms with being diagnosed with motor neurone disease, while he embarks upon an ambitious study of time at Cambridge University.

The film beat off competition from Paddington, The Imitation Game, '71, Pride and Under the Skin.

Presented by David Beckham, the award is expected to be one of many for the film tonight.

Eddie Redmayne, who played Hawking, is expected to claim the Best Actor Award, while Felicity Jones is nominated for Best Actress as Redmayne’s on-screen wife Jane Hawking.

The Grand Budapest Hotel, Birdman and Boyhood are among other leading contenders for tonight's awards, considered an indicator of likely success at Hollywood's Academy Awards later this month.
