Jennifer Lawrence has won Best Supporting Actress at the 2014 Baftas for her role in black comedy American Hustle.

The actress, who stars as a neurotic housewife in David O’R ussell’s film, was unable to attend the ceremony due to work commitments.

Lawrence beat tough competition from Lupita Nyong’o in 12 Years A Slave, Sally Hawkins in Blue Jasmine, Oprah Winfrey in The Butler and Julia Roberts in August: Osage County.

She won the award for Best Supporting Actress at the Golden Globes last month, and now looks in a strong position to win her second Academy Award for her portrayal of Rosalyn Rosenfeld.

The actress is nominated in the same category at the Oscars, which takes place in two weeks on Sunday 2 March. At last year's event, when she won Best Actress for Silver Linings Playbook, Lawrence memorably tripped up the stairs.

Lawrence missed out on the Bafta in 2013 when French actress Emmaunelle Riva triumphed for her role in Amour.

American Hustle also picked up Best Original Screenplay at the 2014 Baftas, which took place at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, London.
