From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. The earnings of the main Avengers cast members has been revealed.

Following the release of Forbes‘ Celebrity 100 earnings list, Marvel fans can now see how much the film’s lead stars earned with the combined sum coming in at a staggering $340m (£270m).

Somewhat surprisingly, Thor star Chris Hemsworth topped the list besting Robert Downey Jr – who plays Iron Man – by more than $10m (£7.9m).

Scarlett Johansson – whose fresh comments addressing recent casting controversies have raised some eyebrows – was the fourth highest-paid Marvel star behind Bradley Cooper for his voice work on Guardians of the Galaxy character Rocket.

You can find the full breakdown below.

Chris Hemsworth (Thor) – $76.4m (£60.7m)

Robert Downey, Jr. (Iron Man) – $66m (£52.5m)

Bradley Cooper (Rocket) – $57m (£45m)

Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow) – $56m (£44.5m)

Chris Evans (Captain America) – $43.5m (£34.6m)

Paul Rudd (Ant-Man) – $41m (£32.6m)

It’s worth noting that these sums also take into account the negotiated price a certain star will receive from the film’s box office profits.

For example, Downey Jr’s agent locked down eight per cent back-end profit, which works out as an additional $55m (£43.7m) on top of his fee for starring.
