Avatar 2, which was originally slated to be the big December release in 2020, has officially been pushed back by an entire year thanks to a major shakeup by Disney.
The reason for the delay can be attributed to Star Wars: the studio has announced three brand new films set in a galaxy far far away.
This could indicate that James Cameron’s planned future instalments – Avatar 3, 4 and 5 – wil be staggered in between, meaning we won’t see the fourth outing until at least 2027 – a whole eight years after news of the sequels were first reported.
Disney acquired Avatar after completing its $71 billion purchase for assets that originally belonged to Fox earlier this year.
Avatar is currently the highest-grossing film of all time, but its crown looks set to stolen by Avengers: Endgame, which has just overtaken Titanic to become the second. It looks like it could overtake Avatar‘s takings in under a month.
Other films to be released by Disney over the next few years include a live-action version of Mulan, a spinoff focused on 101 Dalamatians baddie Cruella de Vil and a remake of Death on the Nile.
In 2019, the studio will also release two untitled Marvel films, one of which is expected to be the Black Widow solo adventure and The Eternals, starring Angelina Jolie and Kumail Nanjiani.
