From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Argylle director Matthew Vaughn has denied that Taylor Swift is the mysterious author whose book inspired his new spy thriller.

The forthcoming Apple TV+ film, which stars Henry Cavill as the titular spy, is based on a manuscript written by pseudonymous author ā€œElly Conwayā€. Elly Conway is also the name of the filmā€™s protagonist, played by Bryce Dallas Howard.

The film rights to the manuscript were apparently bought in a $200 million deal before it was adapted by screenwriter Jason Fuchs.

Because of the mystery surrounding Conwayā€™s real identity, many Taylor Swift fans online became convinced that the singer had written the book. They pointed to clues including Swiftā€™s penchant for argyle sweaters, and the filmā€™s inclusion of a Scottish Fold cat. Swift owns two Scottish Folds named Meredith Grey and Olivia Benson.

However, in a new interview with Rolling Stone, Kingsman and Kick Ass director Vaughn shot the rumour down.

ā€œIā€™m not a big internet guy, and it was actually my daughter who came up to me ā€“ this is the power of celebrity and the internet ā€“ and said, ā€˜You never told me Taylor wrote the book!ā€™ā€ said Vaughn. ā€œAnd Iā€™m looking at her going, ā€˜What are you talking about Taylor Swift wrote the book? She didnā€™t write the book!ā€™ And I was laughing because I was like, ā€˜Itā€™s not true! She didnā€™t write the book!ā€™ But my daughter was convinced of it.ā€

ā€œThere is a real bookā€¦ and itā€™s a really good book,ā€ he continued. ā€œAnd there is an Elly Conway who wrote the book, but itā€™s not Taylor Swift. And I say that because I imagine Taylor Swift has a load of people trying to jump on her bandwagon left, right, and center, and I donā€™t want to be a part of that club. I did read the conspiracies and I was like, wow, they donā€™t leave a stone unturned! But itā€™s not Taylor Swift. She definitely didnā€™t write the book.ā€

Vaughn did admit that Swift had unintentionally inspired the filmā€™s feline star. The cat featured in Argylle is Vaughnā€™s own cat, which his supermodel wife Claudia Schiffer was convinced to welcome into their family by their daughters after watching Swiftā€™s documentary Miss Americana.

ā€œIronically, what she is responsible for is the Scottish Fold,ā€ said Vaughn. ā€œI got home one day, it was Christmas, and I was like, ā€˜What the f*** is that noise?ā€™ And Iā€™m running around the house and I hear a noise, and the kids had seen a Taylor Swift documentary and there was a Scottish Fold in that, and theyā€™d persuaded my wife, Claudia, to get them the kitten for Christmas. It was bought without my permission and hidden from me.ā€

Vaughnā€™s new film also stars Sam Rockwell, Ariana DeBose, John Cena, Bryan Cranston, Samuel L. Jackson, Dua Lipa, and Catherine Oā€™Hara.

Argylle will arrive in cinemas on 2 February.
