Every summer sees the release of a variety of horror films that perform well at the box office regardless of how well they've been received critically. Getting the nod from critics, however, is what separates a box office success from something that can stand out in a genre so bogged down with lacklustre attempts to scare audiences.

One new horror to have surprisingly received unanimous praise from critics is Annabelle: Creation, the prequel to 2014 horror spin-off Annabelle which followed the terrifying doll featured in 2013 hit The Conjuring.

In fact, the praise is such that Annabelle: Creation currently holds a perfect Rotten Tomatoes score of 100% bolstered when considering Annabelle's lowly 29%.

The film is directed by David F. Sandberg who enjoyed sleeper hit success with last year's horror Lights Out starring Teresa Palmer and Maria Bello. It stars Stephanie Sigman, Talitha Bateman, Anthony LaPaglia and Miranda Otto.

It's important to note that the film's perfect score is based on just ten reviews, but they have all praised the film as a vast improvement on its predecessor.

Peter Debruge of Variety said of the movie: “This effective yet empty-headed horror movie goes to show how eager audiences are to be scared, and how even an unsightly doll can do the trick when the spirit is willing, while The Hollywood Reporter's Justin Lowe wrote: "Sandberg demonstrates a deft affinity for the elaboration of horror conventions, as well as the expansion of The Conjuring universe."

Annabelle: Creation is released in the UK on 11 August.
